eBay Vintage 1970’s Providence, RI Police Camera Case Description Here is a Very RARE 1960s or 70’s Providence, RI police camera case, that belonged to Capt. Leo Trambukis. The camera is missing, but the canon camera case, with assessories is included. It’s labeled, “Providence Police” on top, with “Capt. Leo Trambukis – Providence Police” on the back. I’m not sure how this item got into central Illinois, I purchased it on a local auction. It is a great local historical piece, and would be great displayed in a local Providence police collection or museum. Here is Capt. Trambukis’s obituary found online, from 2013: PROVIDENCE — Leo P. Trambukis, 91, retired Providence public safety commissioner and the first police officer to hold that post, died Wednesday in Venice, Fla. “Law enforcement has lost a good friend,” South Kingstown Police Chief Vincent Vespia commented Thursday. Vespia knew Trambukis from his own days as a police officer in Providence. “I always respected his counsel on law enforcement strategies,” Vespia said. “He was the epitome of a true professional police officer, as well as a gentleman.” Johnston police Chief Richard S. Tamburini, formerly the deputy chief in Providence, said, “He was the brains of the outfit. If he had to review your report you’d better be correct. You’d better cross the t’s and dot the i’s. He was a stickler, made sure you wrote a good report.” Trambukis “served with such quiet strength and dignity throughout his career with the Providence and state police,” Tamburini went on. “I was so impressed with his calm and steady demeanor. He set the tone for an extremely professional police department. He was the mentor — the role model — for me when I was in Providence.” Trambukis was a son of Michael Trambukis and Jeanette (Tremblay) Trambukis. He was the husband of the late Fiorinda (Bianchi) Trambukis. “I married the girl next door,” he said in 1987, noting they still lived in “Fee’s” childhood house on Atwells Avenue in Providence. The two went to Mount Pleasant High School together, but did not fall in love until Leo returned from the service as an Army Air Corps officer in Europe during World War II. He was the first Greek-American to serve on the Providence police force. When he first joined the Providence police, Trambukis recalled in the 1987 interview, there were no two-way radios or computerized printouts of recent crimes — only a “call box” on the street from which officers received hourly crime reports. Officers walked the area and responded to what they saw. “You felt as though you were 10 feet tall walking down the street, because you thought everyone had to be looking at you,” he mused, recalling the respect children and the elderly showed him. Things had grown different by the time of his retirement. Trambukis called it “a period of lawlessness,” likening it to the Wild West and the gangster era. While on the Providence police force, Trambukis “took part in every single planning event and every single movement that took place in this city,” said Walter Clark, deputy chief and later chief, speaking on the occasion of Trambukis’ retirement in 1987 after 41 years with city and state police. Trambukis organized the security forces when President Lyndon B. Johnson campaigned for reelection in 1964 in Providence. When the Blizzard of ’78 hit, he coordinated fire and police rescue efforts. “I left home for what was supposed to be a normal day and came home six days later,” he said in a 1987 interview. He slept sporadically on a conference table amid frenzied efforts to get the roads plowed, more than 2,000 abandoned autos towed away and emergency services delivered. He was noted for his intellectual curiosity and interest in history, and so was a natural to write about the history of the city Police Department for its 100th anniversary in 1964. His essay on the importance of precise regulations, published in the December 1966 FBI Law Enforcement Bulletin, prompted more than 300 law enforcement agencies throughout the country to request Providence’s updated regulation manual. “No organization, not even a family, can operate effectively without rules,” Trambukis wrote in his essay. “It’s not a very profound statement, but I believe it’s true,” he said years later. Trambukis left the city police force in 1979 to become director of telecommunications for the state, where he coordinated the computer-based statewide criminal justice information system, which was linked to the FBI’s National Crime Information Center in Washington and the National Law Enforcement Telecommunications System in Phoenix, Ariz.
