eBay Salvador Dali Divine Comedy Paradise Canto 28, (The Movement Towards God) Original Woodblock Engraving 10 1/4″ X 12 3/4″ 1960 Deluxe edition/with documentation (see below) Not Signed or Numbered Up for your consideration is a vintage Original Woodblock Engraving of Salvador Dali’s “Divine Comedy, Paradise 28″, (The Movement Towards God ) an unusual find from an vintage art portfolio. The Divine Comedy by Dante was one of Dali’s most important projects and most time consuming as well. It took Dali almost 5 years to produce the 3,500 blocks needed for all the colors of all the works. The Woodcut was printed on BFK Rives paper, in 1960, in Paris, and by Les Heures Claires, Paris. The sheet measures 10 1/4″ x 12 3/4″. Image measures 7″ x 9 3/4”. As you can see from the justification page of the portfolio, there were several editions within the overarching French edition. Most woodcuts were part of the standard edition, limited to 3,900. The earliest units of the print run were part of the deluxe editions (15, 150, 350 and 350 units). This woodcut was pulled directly from portfolio #343. So, the woodcut comes from the first of two editions of 350 units (covering portfolios 166-515). Though this woodcut was issued unsigned and unnumbered, it is verified to be one of earliest in the print run. It’s industry wisdom that collectors should acquire prints early in the edition because quality is best early on.
