eBay Summary: This Gorham sterling silver set includes a sauceboat (creamer) and two handled bowl/porringer (sugar bowl), both dated between 1858-1892 and stamped with the Gorham hallmark. The art nouveau style of the set, with its intricate repousse pattern, makes it a beautiful addition to any antique collection. There is a fine gilt job within the interiors of the creamer and sugar bowls, which is still visible and vibrant. The set is made of Sterling Silver (.925) and is in excellent condition, ready to be used or displayed. The sauceboat can be used for serving gravy or other sauces, while the porringer is perfect for individual servings of soup or porridge. Don’t miss out on this unique and rare find. It is a rare find for collectors and would make a unique and valuable gift for anyone interested in antique silver. Condition: The sauceboat/creamer does not have any structural damage (punctures, missing pieces, etc), but the porringer/sugar bowl does have a dent on the inside of the bowl (opposite of the handle on the outside). This silver is barely scratched, and the original polish job is still widely present. The gilded inside is visible, however is slightly fading away. The repousse is present without a ware on inside the crevices/cracks, and the chasing on the handles are without ware inside the crevices/cracks. Overall a great set of silverware in great condition, made over 100 years ago! Dimensions: Sauceboat/Creamer (single handled bowl): 133 grams, L: 5.2 in, W: 3.7 in, H: 3.0 in. Porringer/Sugar Bowl (double handled bowl): 168 grams, L: 7.0 in, W: 4.4 in, H: 2.7 in. History: A similar pair of a creamer and sugar bowl exists in reference 1. Looking at the hallmarks, we can deduce that by the stamp imprints on the Gorham lion, anchor, and letter G, that the antique likely comes from before the 20th century. Furthermore, because Gorham employed a marking system for years after 1868, we are able to date some Gorham sterling silvers after 1868. Both the creamer and sugar bowl possess the year mark for 1892, which would fall in line with the usage of stamping the hallmarks. I date this sterling silver set to 1892, with more comfortably at the range of 1858-1892. The Gorham brand is the company of Jabez Gorham who set up the company in Providence, Rhode Island. Jabez would give the company to his son John Gorham, who increases the production capabilities and technologies within the factories. John is innovative and expansive for the time, introducing steam powered machinery at the factory in Rhode Island, and partnering with Micheal Gibney who is the first to register a patent design for silver works in the USA. The partnership between Gibney and John would end in distaste, but the company would thrive nonetheless. By 1860, the company introduces bronze casting operations and produces the Christopher Columbus statue seen at 1893 world Columbian exposition in Chicago. Jon’s success with the company would allow various privileges in production grants, along with sustaining the economic survival of the company to the modern day. For example, Mary Todd Lincoln would commission Gorham to produce: “tea and flat wares” for the white house, and the government would commission Gorham to produce silver sets for the USS Rhode Island in 1907. Gorhams’ Rhode Island operations at the peak include 37 acres of land with over 30 buildings in the Elmwood neighborhood of Providence, Rhode Island. Gorham would also establish two buildings in New York following the turn of the 19th century at 889-891 Broadway St, 390 5th Avenue. From Gorham to Textron (1967), Textron to Dansk international designs (1988), Dansk international designs to Brown-Forman Corporation (1991), and Brown-Forman Corporation to department 51 of the Lenox group transactions (2005), the company would move around as the turn of the 21st century rose. By the financial crisis of 2008, the Lenox group in 2009 filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy and is under Clarion Capital Partners which operates the company under the name “Lenox Corporation ”, offering three primary silver segments: Gorham, Lenox, and Dansk. In 2020, Clarion Capital Partners would sell the company to Lifetime Brands Inc, which owns rights for various historic producers in silver. Overall, both Durgin and Gorham companies are renown names in the silver production industry of the United States. Durgin would meet its end by the 20th century, carrying with it a legacy of fine silvers, while for over 160 years, Gorham would continue on to this day. Perhaps the silvers in your cabinets are products of Gorham under the Lenox Corporation or Lifetime Brands Inc. Uniqueness: I cannot find any exact pairs of this style and shape from Gorham, nor can I find similar pairs with such conditions as this. The gilt on the interior is still vibrant, and the outside of the sterling silver remains quite unscratched. Because the model number, year mark, Gorham mark, and sterling mark are all present on both the pair, the history enthusiast is able to discover more information about this specific pair. In another sense, the pair has stayed together for over 100 years in great condition which can be rare at this price range!
