This print is a double impression meant to display as a wall hanging designed and printed by Peggy Norton, an avid gardener who utilized flowers, plants growth, fruit and vegetables in her numerous prints. From Elena M. Sarni’s book, “Trailblazing Women Printmakers,” By the 1960’s Peggy was experimenting as a Folly Cove designer with transparent inks in block printing. This allowed for overprinting, with the base layer color showing through. She stated that she had set herself the challenge to “get as many colors out of three printings as I possibly could” for the printing of Small Fruit. She ultimately used the primary colors red, yellow, and blue mixed with transparent inks but printed dozens of strips to test the color combinations of her overlays with the transparent inks to figure out how the colors would come through one another. To Peggy, “every one (print) was an experiment.” Measurements: Wall hanging measures 39.5 by 24 inches which includes a considerable beige cotton field. Side borders are 3.5 inches and the print itself measures 17 inches by 27 inches. Condition: There is color loss to the ink most evident in the red, brown and green bars that separate the two impressions where they’ve now appeared to marble in appearance. The field is clean of the weird mystery spots we so often inherit when buying a FC piece with a few extremely minor flecks here and there – nothing considerable. The back is clean (apologies for the wrinkled appearance in that photo – it’s another windy day!). In terms of color, “Small Fruit” is a masterclass in variation from Ms. Norton.
