Up for sale, a 1959 Gibson Les Paul Special, finished in TV Yellow nitro lacquer and complete with a hardshell case. Honestly aged and with a couple player-friendly tweaks on the late ’50s Double Cut formula, this Special has been augmented with an ABR-1 bridge and a set of Pat. Pending Grover Rotomatic tuning machines, increasing stability and ensuring accurate intonation. This is an extremely lively instrument, and the Hondurdan mahogany construction yields an acoustic voice that chimes and punches in equal measure. A real fire breather, this Special’s P-90s are wound on the hotter side (the norm for Double Cut examples), offering a bit more output, compression and bark while retaining a glassy treble cut. The bridge pickup has plenty of growl and midrange emphasis, while the neck pickup has a woody detail and heft. The middle position achieves a great balance of the tonal properties of the two coils, especially with the neck pickup Volume rolled back a hair. Professionally setup here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar and weighing 7lbs 2oz, this Les Paul Special plays exceedingly well with low action and fresh 10-46 strings. Neck Specs: -Wood: Honduran mahogany -Shape: Chunky ’59 C, measuring .870” 1st fret, .999” 12th fret -Fretboard: Brazilian rosewood, dot inlay -Frets: Jumbo (refret), no wear -Scale Length: 24 3/4” -Nut: 1 11/16”, bone (upgraded) -Tuners: Grover Rotomatic, Pat Pending (vintage, replacement) -Serialization: 9-prefix, inked Body Specs: -Wood: Honduran mahogany -Pickups: P-90 x2, Bridge: 8.6k ohms, Neck: 8.5k -Harness: Untouched solder, CentraLab pots date to 44th week of ’58, Bumblebee tone caps -Hardware: No-wire ABR-1 bridge (modern), stopbar (original) -Plastics: Four-ply black pickguard, black bonnet knobs, P-90 covers, switch surround, jack plate, neck spacer With its quintessential 1959 neck carve (slightly more slender than 1957-58, yet with plenty of heft), all original electronics and plastics, and even the original lightweight aluminum tailpiece, this golden age Gibson checks multiple boxes for serious players and collectors alike. The guitar does exhibit a common heel repair, professionally addressed and smooth to the touch. To accommodate the ABR-1 bridge, the original wraparound tailpiece inserts have been cleanly plugged and touched-up with a particularly good color match. Aside from the tailpiece inserts, the TV Yellow gloss nitro lacquer finish is 100% original, with prominent, tight lacquer checking and various dings and scuffs consistent with decades of use. There is one very tight and slight split in the mahogany on the back at the treble-side waist that’s only “skin deep,” and wear through the finish along the lower bout body edge and similarly along the headstock edges. A circa 1990s Gibson USA brown tolex hardshell case is included.
